Bògòlanfini, Bogolan or Mud Cloth, is a handwoven cotton fabric traditionally painted with mud from the Niger River in Mali.
On narrow looms, strips of fabric are woven and then sewn together into larger cloths. These fabrics are then soaked in a decoction made from the leaves of the N'gallama tree. Once the fabric has dried in the sun, it is painted with a special kind of mud collected from riverbeds and fermented for up to a year in large clay vessels. A chemical reaction between the leaves and the mud makes the color permanent. The result is a completely eco-friendly textile!
A World of Craft Studio has created a collection of simple geometric patterns that highlight the key ingredients of Bogolan: hand-spun cotton and dark mud.
